5 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Recruiter
Hiring a recruiter is itself a hiring decision - and most industrial companies don't treat it with the rigor it deserves. Before engaging any recruiting firm, ask these five questions to separate specialists who will deliver results from generalists who will waste your time.
First: Have you placed roles in my specific market? Not just 'industrial' - your specific segment. A recruiter who has placed compressed air technicians understands the difference between rotary screw and centrifugal experience. A generalist won't even know to ask. Second: What is your candidate sourcing strategy beyond job boards? If the answer is primarily job boards, walk away.
"The best recruiter for your industrial role isn't the biggest firm - it's the one that understands your equipment."
Third: Can you describe the day-to-day reality of the role I'm filling? A great recruiter can articulate what your technician's Tuesday looks like - the diagnostic challenges, the customer interactions, the travel requirements. Fourth: What is your average time-to-fill for similar roles? Get specific numbers, not vague promises.
Fifth: What happens if the hire doesn't work out? Understanding the guarantee structure tells you how confident the recruiter is in their own process. A strong replacement guarantee signals that the recruiter stands behind their placements - because they've done the work to get it right the first time.
