    Both, and we know the difference. Commercial HVAC covers office buildings, retail, hospitality, and healthcare. Industrial HVAC covers process cooling, cleanrooms, data centers, and manufacturing environments where temperature and humidity tolerances are measured in fractions of a degree. The technician profiles overlap but the depth of knowledge is different. A commercial HVAC tech who can troubleshoot a rooftop unit may not be equipped to diagnose a chilled water system in a pharmaceutical cleanroom. We screen for the specific application because the title alone doesn't tell you enough.

    EPA 608 Universal is the floor. Everyone has it or should. What differentiates candidates is NATE certification (especially in installation and service specialty tracks), HVAC Excellence Master Specialist credentials, BPI Building Analyst for energy work, and ASHRAE BEAP or BEMP for building energy modeling. Chiller experience with Trane, Carrier, York, or Daikin is its own credential in practice. Controls experience with Johnson Controls Metasys, Siemens Desigo, Honeywell, or Automated Logic is increasingly what separates a $30/hour tech from a $45/hour tech.

    In industrial and commercial HVAC, they're both. A territory sales engineer selling chillers or VRF systems needs to understand psychrometrics, load calculations, refrigerant transitions (R-410A to R-454B and other low-GWP replacements), and building automation integration. The relationship matters for getting in the door, but the technical knowledge is what closes the deal and keeps the customer. We screen HVAC sales candidates for both because companies that hire a pure relationship seller for a technical product end up replacing them within a year.

    The refrigerant transition is the biggest immediate driver. The EPA AIM Act phasedown of high-GWP refrigerants (R-410A, R-404A, R-134a) is creating demand for technicians trained on A2L alternatives and retrofit procedures. At the same time, the AI infrastructure buildout is pushing data center cooling demand to levels no one anticipated five years ago, and precision cooling technicians, chiller specialists, and controls engineers are all in short supply for those projects. Behind both of those, the aging workforce continues to thin the candidate pool. The average age of a commercial HVAC technician in the US keeps climbing, and trade schools are not filling the gap fast enough.
